Dreams Of A Dystopian Land, Margate
It was yet another glorious day today so after another early morning run we decided we just had to head to the seaside and one of our favourite destinations, Margate. The journey down there was stress free for the most part as we now head there via Faversham rather than by Canterbury - it saves a good 15 - 20 minutes going via that route.
As soon as we got there we parked the car and walked to Market Square in the Old Town and chose The Bull's Head as our pub of choice (a fascinating fact is that is where Eric Morecambe held his wedding reception way back in 1952!). We sat outside on a bench to consume our cold pints and that's where I took the second extra image - I really like the surreal elements I saw in front of me.
It was then time to walk along the seafront and that's when we started to see something unusual - there was some sort of filming going on. I've now learnt that this was for the BBC production The Dream Lands, which is being adapted from the book Dreamland by the novelist Rosa Rankin-Lee. It's set in the near future, 2039 to be exact, when temperatures are rising weather wise and politically. It sounds dystopian but with the possibility of hope, redemption and love. Sounds as if it will be good! It's here where I took my main image. I shot it through one of the props, a badly vandalised car. All I did was wait for one of the production crew to walk into the centre of the composition and there was the image I wanted. I didn't realise until later that I had caught my reflection in the window but I think this really adds to the overall photo - it looks almost as if someone is crouching in the footwell and shooting outwards!
Dreamland is, of course, a Margate institution. It began as an amusement park and entertainment centre way back in 1880 but the first use of the Dreamland name was not used until 1920. It went through many iterations and closed for what seemed like good in 2003. However, after a lot of ups and downs it is now thriving again under new ownership.
My first extra was taken at one of the seafront car parks - I loved how this car seems to poke slyly out from behind the cliff face. The third extra was taken in the town centre itself and the last image was taken inside the Turner gallery. We had a very creative day photography wise!
