Tin Tabernacles of 2025 #1

The Tin Tabernacle project, which occupied a lot of time in 2024, is off to a sluggish start  this year. The two I’d intended to record in February didn’t happen when bad weather scuppered the trip to Arran. I’m still hoping to include them though  – Arran is more accessible to me than Skye.

Here is the first tabernacle of 2025. It’s Elgol Church of Scotland which is no longer in use. Elgol is situated at the south western edge of Skye and is surrounded by sea, lochs and mountains. We had a holiday here once many years ago. That holiday was memorable for the midgies which plagued us. No midgies today – it’s too early in the year and too breezy. It is a really picturesque part of the island and such a pleasure to revisit.

I don’t think I’ll ever not be fascinated by these old corrugated iron buildings and I’ll always seek them out.  I’m hoping for a few more while I’m away this time.  However, Cameraman has made an intriguing suggestion for another project which I’m going to enjoy researching and planning. More of that anon.

The first extra is from Elgol pier looking up Loch Coruisk towards the Black Cuillin ridge. This is a dramatic and properly scary mountain range.

The second extra shows where we walked on the return to Broadford. The path is a disused railway line which ran to marble quarries. The mountain is Blà Bheinn . It was a very good walk on a decent path or, at times, on lovely springy grass. I saw wheatears (I'd spotted one last night too), sky larks and meadow pipits. The wildflowers are rampant. We did 19K steps so earned our lunch.

The weather has been perfect today. It's about 20° though the breeze takes the edge off the temperature. I don't mind that because it's sunny and dry.

We are comfortable in the bijou cabin and are looking forward to another sunset over the Red Cuillin hills.
