55 Broadway London Underground Headquarters.

Today I stopped to look at this statue and decided that it's really quite odd and a bit forbidding - the big guy looks a bit stern. The building that it's on the side of is 55 Broadway, above St James' Park tube station.... a little googling and I discovered that it was the tallest building in London when it was built in the 20's. This statue, 'Day' by Jacob Epstein, and it's partner 'Night' on different part of the building, were hated when they were unveiled and caused controversy and moral panic. Apparently he had to shorten the offending piece of anatomy!

Funny to think of the furore it caused and now hardly anyone glances up as they walk past. Sadly London Underground will be moving out of the building in 2015 and it will become luxury flats. I suppose that should keep the outside of the building intact.
