Stepping Out
Having more or less completed the work in the house, and being blessed by beautiful weather, there’s a chance to head out for the day.
It seems so long since we’ve done this I just don’t know where I want to go - but eventually decide to explore one of the Nortb Wales Wildlife Trust reserves. We joined the trust last year; the reserves are many and varied, and although there is no entrance fee we felt membership would be good to support the work they do.
Today it’s Gors Maen Llwyd, an area of peat moorland adjacent to Llyn Brenig. Really, this needs to be an early morning visit - at sunrise ideally - but by the time we get there it’s midday. Still, it’s beautifully peaceful, the silence only broken by birdsong - notably the repetitive sound of the cuckoo and distant curlew.
We walk to the hide overlooking Brenig and watch distant cormorants and gulls - too far off for decent shots.
A lone mallard paddles across the water leaving a graphic wake of ripples across the calm stillness, and a family of Greylag geese swim over to the shore, then walk in regimented step to graze on grass.
Our walk’s not far, but far enough for me - I really wish my energy levels would increase. I don’t even have the energy to look for ospreys at the look-out on the other side of Brenig, and so we head for home - but it’s been so good to get out!
And so you have a blip beyond the garden! My main’s the mallard with the graphic wake, my extra the much cuter Greylag family - though this may not be the right way round! Motion - but not related to the built environment I’m afraid.
