Whortleberries!

In Scotland they call it a blaeberry, in Wales it is known as a whimberry, in Devon they talk of whortleberry on Dartmoor 'tiz a 'hurt'.

Call it what you want they tastes delicious but it is a chore to pick, you seem to spend hours plucking, squashing and eating them just to end up with a paltry amount.
In the past there were well known places on Dartmoor where they would grow in profusion' and they were picked by local people to sell

I found these small blue berries, about the size of a black current, on the sides of these "Pillow mounds" at Headland Warren and I would have had to search for quite a sometime to get enough to make a pie but with the weather we have had lately we should be in for a bumper crop. So if your down this way bring a bowl with you!
