Blueberry on the Waves
The first of the Spring series of races out of Whitehaven.
Today, thanks to helm/owner Edward, I was crewing on 'Blueberry', a beautiful beneteau 27.7. So far she is the boat I have felt most comfortable in, because she was so compact - more my kind of size. In the cockpit everything was in reach and the G&B navitronics quite understandable . She was set up for sailing single handed, but was also spacious enough to fit 3 of us in. Just had to remember that the boom was low and there was an aft mainsheet which swept all before it and to keep your head well down on tacks and gybes. Below deck there was more room than you could have thought with 2 sleeping areas as well as toilet and galley/table space. I always loved reading about Toad's caravan and dreaming of living an adventure in it - well, this boat gave me the same feeling.
The harbour looks very calm here but it was gusting fiercely outside. Richard, the other crew, and I took a reef in as we were waiting for the start - it all went like clockwork. In fact, another reef would have made it a lot easier for Edward to helm and we bucketed along, often sideways on, to the South cardinal buoy and back. For her size she was very fast and was not far behind the bigger boats. Really the most fun!
As I'd helped set up club lasers at Bassenthwaite in the morning and spent the rest of the day being blown inside out, I was quite worn out by evening, so much so that after a scrummy Easter roast dinner, cooked by my sister, I fell fast asleep on the sofa.
I am SURE I don't snore!
