It's not many days (nights?) that my blip is done and dusted by ten minutes after midnight. We had been for an Easter smörgåsbord at Rose's, together with her daughter and family, and enjoyed an excellent evening. As we drove home from Härnösand we noticed the Northern Lights were on. We took the back road and drove until we came to a place relatively free of trees where we stopped and got out to see how it looked. It looked spectacular! It was across much of the sky and very bright with a definite reddish tinge in places. Definitely the best this year, of the four or five times they have appeared for us.
I chose the main picture because I liked the way the constellation, (sorry, asterism!) The Plough is at the top of the picture. If you want to know why it's an asterism and not a constellation + a whole pile of nerdish information check out the Plough web page at the "The Sky at Night"! I got lost there for at least 20 minutes, being the nerdish sort I am.
The extra shows the view looking north, where the aurora was showing a different style.
Once home the sky had changed again. Now the lights flickered into existence in quite a small area of sky, hung there for just a few seconds and flickered out again. But this was happening all over such a big area of sky so it was as if they were rapidly flashing on and off. I have a memory of seeing a similar display 40 years ago, so for us this was very unusual. (Because the individual sections lasted such a short time the photos were distinctly underwhelming so this was something that had to be experienced, rather than photographed!)
So that was our midnight experience - eventually a crick in my neck drove me inside and then tiredness crashed in! Bed and sleep!
And now it is morning. Looks like a day for a walk and more garden work. We shall see!
