New leaves

I love to see new leaves coming out on a beech hedge, with last year's dead leaves still in place. Strange that beech hedges do this but beech trees don't. There's a word for this phenomenon (of course there is), which I've forgetten - but last time I read an article about it, it seemed that they still don't really know why it happens.
