Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

Archie and I set off into town. Actually, we didn't - we set off the other way, and a town bus came along and so we jumped on it. I wanted to see what on earth they're doing in the Lawn Market, just down from the Castle. They are replacing the setts (cobbles) laying them more evenly. Perhaps because the pipers often march down them during the Tattoo, and you wouldn't want a playing, marching piper to trip up, and cause everyone behind hime to fall. There was nobody working there whn we went by. No rush...

We then walked down the steps to Victoria Street. - I do hope they're thinking of fixing that street up. The setts are completely spoiled by lot of large areas of tarmac, just slapped on with no care taken, to cover some roadworks years ago. I can hope...

We wandered through the Grassmarket. I love seeing it sunny and busy - quite Continental, eating and drinking outside. And yes, we did have a treat before we tackled the Vennel Steps (Extra). They were particularly trying today, but we got there, spoiling many many photos of the people snapping away at the top.

We walked across the Meadows. There are two paths to take, making a longer walk round the edge of the square. We sat on the bench and considered them. And then headed straight - over by the cricket pitch, over the road, then over the putting green - I must have saved a few hundred steps. For I was well tired!

In fact, I dozed for the rest of the afternoon. JR came back from her tasks in town, including going to the bank, and took Archie out again. For quite an old fella, he's always ready for another walk.
