Fantasy Island
A detail from the 'Soho' Tapestry attributed to John Vanderbank, 'Yeoman Arras-maker to the Great Wardrobe' (active 1683-1717), on display at Anne of Cleeves' House in Lewes.
The design is based around a number of floating 'islands' depicting imaginative 'oriental' scenes in a genre that we would now call Chinoiserie, although curiously, at the time of its creation, this work would actually have been described as a Tapestry 'After the Indian Manner'.
