Sgwarnog: In the Field

Lowe

Monday night music at the Belgrave Music Hall, in the form of Rosie Lowe, an acclaimed singer-songwriter in the soul/indietronica vein. She was accompanied by two collaborators from her current (Guardian five-star reviewed) album: Harvey Grant (keys etc., also pictured) and D’Monk (beats, bass etc. - lost in the shadows behind all the kit on the left). This is the same trio that performed a couple of songs on Later… back in November. I first came across her work via Gilles Peterson on 6Music.

I’m a little tentative about standing gigs, in terms of knee endurance. There was plenty of space though, and I surprisingly found myself down the ‘front,’ a couple of metres from the stage, hence a semi-reasonable gig picture for a change.

Support came from Uma, another collaborator from Rosie’s album, but singing her own songs, including some in Spanish, solo with guitar, which gave it it much more folk feel. Her style and tone reminded me of Astrud Gilberto.

Both sets were really good, and it’s always worth the effort to support indie artists in indie venues.

Earlier, some more firsts on the butterfly list for the year: a Green Hairstreak on Moorside and a few Holly Blue in the graveyard. That’s ten species for the year already - with everything boosted by this exceptional spell of fine weather.
