Blackthorn on Butthole Lane
Earlier even than cherry blossom, blackthorn puts on a stunning display each Spring. It's not that long since I realised what it was.
Basil and I were Cecilying down Butthole Lane. The name of the lane has caused much ribaldry in the past but it has a very prosaic origin. The lane begins close to St Botolph's Church. I gather that in late Medieval times the young men of the parish were obliged to make their way down the lane after Sunday morning service in order to practice their archery skills at the butts that were placed here.
It's been a long time since I walked down the lane. Now of course, I need Cecily to help me navigate it. I'd gone in search of the nature reserve only to find that the Kingsgate housing estate comes right to the edge of the lane. I'm assured that the reserve is still there. That will involve another visit although I'm not sure that Basil is up to it. He was very tired when we got home.
Extra is of the litter bags that the community minded litter pickers had left for the refuse collection van at the top of the lane.
