SILLY SATURDAY
It's Silly Saturday and it's pretty silly to try to kill a rubber snake.
~
At the Zoo in Milwaukee, WI, USA, they have a free flight area that showcases raptors of one variety or another. Most are free-flown over the heads of the audience, from one trainer to another with a glove full of Purina Raptor Chow (dead chicken, most likely).
~
Although capable of flight, this bird is 98% ground dwelling. It's related to the Secretary Birds (not sure which species this is) who make a living walking around the savannas of Africa looking for something to eat. They'll eat about anything they can catch...including venomous snakes. They will peck at a snake's head to disorient it, then grab it and smack it on the ground as hard as they can.....over and over until it's dead. Then they'll swallow it...whole.
~
For obvious reasons, this demonstration used a rubber snake as a real snake might injure the bird. This bird will smack that rubber snake time and time again to demonstrate its ferocity. The trainer will approach after a while and remove the snake and replace it with some real food...oft times a dead mouse. In any case, it's "silly" watching a bird "kill" a rubber snake.

BEST IN LARGE.
