Trompe l'oeil in Knaresborough
Knaresborough had many blanked out windows in Georgian buildings due to the window tax.
There are a number of paintings are made to deceive the eye into thinking there is a window there. There is even a town trail if you want to see them all.
We had an expert guide to take us around the town centre this morning. A few people had to leave for earlier trains, but most of us were able to enjoy the walk. The guide was informative, lively, funny, enthusiastic and very good at gathering us up and keeping us safe.
It was much colder this morning and I was glad when there were patches of sunlight to stand in.
After a packed lunch, we said our goodbyes and set off home. The A1M was horrendously busy, but there were no hold ups. I left on the A68 for the quieter and more scenic route home.
It's been a brilliant holiday. I wish I could do another this year, but it will be next year and the Brecon Beacons for me.
P.S. I listened to some of The World at One on Radio Four as I drove home. Edward Sturton, one of my favourite presenters, interviewed David Dimbleby about his father’s report of entering a Belsen with the British troops. You can find the recording online.
It created strong reactions. Initially the BBC said it was too distressing to broadcast. Richard D said he would resign if they withheld it from the public.
It’s worth catching the interview.
