The Rest
“Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children.”
Crazy Horse
Must be my age but I got hopelessly ‘lost’ on the roundabout at Tredegar Park. I took a short detour off the M4 to get petrol at Asda and found myself in the wrong lane more than once trying to get back on; heading out on the SDR towards Newport before finding a roundabout I could actually turn around on. The rest of the journey to Porthcawl was a doddle.
The dust is still settling after the funeral on Monday so we decided on a trip to the coast for a breath of fresh air in the sunshine. I confess I was keen to visit again to see what ‘The Rest’ looks like now; my grandfather was there over a hundred years ago; a fact finding mission I believe to visit the miners rest home (as it was then) on which to base Talygarn miners convalescent home which they were setting up. I was also involved peripherally in the renovation of the buildings as one of a team of QS’s several years ago. Altogether different circumstances for me today, starting with coffee and cake on the balcony of the café opposite, then a walk along the coast path into town. Got a real buzz when I saw a couple of Stonechats (male and female) standing up on the gorse bushes on the headland, haven’t seen them for years. By the time we got to the RNLI station it was time for a late lunch, a crab sandwich at one of the outlets there. Lovely in the warm sunshine but nippy when the veil of cloud drew in.
