Standing tall

We are now in Trier, our home for the next three nights.

We made our way here slowly as we visited multiple locations which featured in Heimat, including these twin trees outside  Schabbach, the Smiddy which was the  Simon family home in Schabbach, the road to Schabbacg and Schabbach itself. However none of these places are actually in Schabbach as it is functional and instead we visited a series of lovely villages in the Hunsrück.

Visiting the locations made for an interesting way to explore the area, taking us to places we might not have visited. In this respect it is not dissimilar to visiting places where ancestors lived in Scotland and Ireland.

We also visited a cemetry where family funerals took place - strangely the fictional headstone is still standing.

Trier itself is lovely and our hotel room overlooks the Porta Nigra, an old (and large) Roman gate.  Looking forward to exploring the city over the next couple of days.
