Forgiveness, fistulas and feast
A packed day. Off to church for the 09:30 service. (I made it despite the change of hour). The theme was all about forgiveness ( prodigal son: Joseph). All very apt given the media discussions over the former Archbishop of Canterbury
Back home as I had some tasks for Mother’s Day ( I was being chef) then back to church for a talk.
It was given by Dr Mhairi Collie, a surgeon at the Western General. In her spare time she runs a charity and undertakes operations in Uganda and elsewhere to treat women suffering from fistulas which can lead to lifelong incontinence and stigmatisation. The operation costs £250 and has an 85% success rate. Some experts estimate that over 2 million women worldwide are suffering.
It is very rare here because we have regular access to medical services but in many parts of the world that is not available and birth complications, often leading to the death of the baby, can lead to fistulas.
She has written a well received novel - The Bright Fabric of Life - which she hopes will raise more funds for her charity: Uganda Childbirth Injury Fund (ucif). A presentation that was both sobering and inspiring.
Back home. In between the kitchen prep I managed time outside in the warm sunshine. It was more like May than end March.
The meal went well according to the family and they enjoyed the home made lemon meringue pie (attached).
Washing up done and kitchen tidied. A full day.!
