Day trip

Whilst we have come here mainly for the sun, we are not very good at sitting by the pool, so today we had booked a bus trip to see some of the wider island.

A visit to a volcano crater ( last erupted 2000 years ago), then the botanic gardens which were great but not enough time there to fully explore, and then the old town of Las Palmas. A very good guide, and we learnt a lot of the history of the island and saw lots in Las Palmas that we would like to explore further. We then went to a beach/ promenade where we had a very good meal and an absolutely perfect dessert (Polvito Uruguayo). The sea was full of surfers and very different climate to the south of the island.

The train track(extra) was in a pedestrianised area as art. It seems the railway closed in 1948, though apparently there is discussion about bringing a railway back to the island.

The other extra is the Governer’s house. Superb plaster/brickwork.
