Korosho Town
When I said I was travelling to Mtwara, a friend in Dar es Salaam remarked that I was heading to ‘Korosho (Cashew) Town’. This region is renowned for its cashew nut production.
I am heading to our landscape office for a week, which is a drive inland to Masasi after flying to Mtwara in the far south of Tanzania, very close to Mozambique. Hungry upon arrival, I remembered that it is Ramadan and that around 85% of people in Masasi are Muslim. Most restaurants close until iftar, and it was a struggle locating snacks.
In general I was operating on a strange schedule today due to little sleep, so I had to leave the office early and find some dinner, before most people were breaking fast. I sensed which restaurants had a proprietor from the minority Christian population, and joined them.
