Thank you for the gates
Up above Staveley is a hill about 270m high .A circular walk over the top from the village is about 5km. I was leading the Tuesday crowd and thank heavens for a glorious day. Wainwright wrote about the hill in his 1974 book on the Outlying Fells and described two separate walks . In his day you could not do a circular walk because the stone walls were not crossable. The blip shows my friends standing on what Wainwright calls the Hugill Fell summit (265m) . The actual summit is behind me at 273m but on the other side of a wall that now has a helpful gate . Another helpful gate means you can walk from Hugill Fell summit to to Reston Scar summit (see Saturday) . Poor old Wainwright had to go up and down twice to tick off the 2 summits. Thank you to whoever has, since 1974 , put gates in the walls
