Reach
Author Lee Child was recently interviewed on BBC Breakfast, where he revealed that the inspiration for the name of the hero of his best selling books came from a chance remark in Asda Kendal nearly thirty years ago.
Being over 6 foot tall, he was often asked in supermarkets if he could reach up to the top shelf and get items down for more vertically challenged shoppers. This happened in Asda Kendal, during a visit to the Lake District, and his wife joked that if his writing didn’t take off, he could find work as a “reacher”. One lightbulb moment later and the character of Jack Reacher was born. The rest, as they say, is history.
And two weeks after that interview, I spotted this plaque when I popped into Asda this morning. I reckon that, as claims to fame go, this is quite a good one…
