Ghent Altarpiece
Today we had a quick breakfast at the flat before setting off in today’s sightseeing. We started with the Belfrey with great views all over the city. Hardly anyone else up there so we had lots of time to look.
Then into the cathedral to view the famous Ghent Altarpiece. There was a virtual tour with headsets first to tell the story of the work and explain the panels, and then we went to look at the work itself. It was much much larger than I expected, and the colours were so bright (I think it’s just been restored). Amazing. The rest of the cathedral was pretty amazing too.
Then into another church for a look around and a listen to a live singer and flautist practising. And then a walk down to the unusual library building - very impressive (see extra). Then we started looking for somewhere for a very late lunch - too late really as not much was available until the evening, so we ended up with savoury waffles instead. Tasty though! A tiring day so back to the flat and eventually to bed. One more full day tomorrow before we head home.
