Doesn’t it look nice?
I’m down at the harbourside after dark, to see a film. I thought it looked rather fun and cheerful. I like it that the lights in the trees are not just for Christmas. The restaurants and bars across the bridge are colourful. The big wheel is missing a few lights but looks good there nevertheless. You can even see a tiny bit of the cathedral peeking up over the bars - knowing its place and relative importance:) The big trumpet shapes are cantilevers (?) for opening the bridge when needed. It’s called Pero’s bridge , named to honour and remember a man who remained a slave while living as a servant in the city. To remind us of the history of the harbourside. I was there to see the Oscar’s winning Brazilian film ‘I’m still here’ about the life of one woman and her children after her husband is disappeared by the military dictatorship in Brazil in 1970. That’s a very bland description - it’s a brilliant film, but very harrowing. One blipper I follow is Brazilian and feels they want to forget those times. But I feel that, as an onlooker, I really want to remember what happens when the rule of law and civil rights are overthrown, and brutal power is what counts
