A buzzard floating over the garden
I heard the mewing of a buzzard while working at my desk, so I went to open the window and saw four buzzards fairly high above the back gardens. They were being 'buzzed' by crows (is that how they got their name, as Helena later wondered?) quite successfully, as we do have lots of crows and jackdaws hanging about the rear of the houses. I like watching the skirmishes so went downstairs to get my camera prepared.
By the time I'd slid open the back door they were quite far away and even higher up. I did stand for a few minutes wondering if they would circle back to our valley but there were no signs. A few minutes later however I stood outside and suddenly a lone buzzard circled fairly low over our house so I started to focus on it. Unfortunately it kept drifting in circles which often meant it became obscured by the trees. for a few seconds I got a reasonable sight between branches and managed to get this view.
We have a lot of woodland on the steep slopes of the various valleys around us. I think there is at least one mating pair which are resident in the vicinity, but the presence of four of them might mean that we may have more buzzards quite soon with the breeding season imminent.
