Rue St. Vincent
I'm still confined to my bed. The idea that I'll be able to walk 60 miles over four days starting on Friday is becoming increasingly unlikely. On the wall opposite is Paris, Rue St. Vincent by Rudolf Quittner. We believe Mrs L's grandfather bought it in the 1920s or possibly earlier. Quittner isn't very well known, perhaps because he was only 38 when he died (in 1910). Born in Opava (now in the Czech Republic), he studied first under Frits Thaulow and then Camille Pissarro and was encouraged by Monet. His style is undoubtedly influenced by the French Impressionists. His best known work is probably View of the Sacre Coeur from Montmartre (here)which verges on pontillism. A more famous painting of rue St. Vincent is that by Georges Seurat, who pioneered pontillism. I remember seeing it in Cambridge.
I have a fanciful idea of going to Paris one day to try finding the spot in rue St. Vincent where they painted from. Looking on Google street view suggests a very different scene today.
