Awaiting the Call……
Most days a large flock of Black Back Gulls sits noisily on the lake at the Taylor Dam. I used to wonder why they spent so much time there some distance from the sea. Then someone enlightened me. The regional landfill is nestled in the hills not far away, as the crow flies. The theory is that one or two gulls keep an eye on activities at the landfill. When loads of remotely edible waste is dumped in the landfill, and before it is covered over, the watchful gulls give the call and the flock of gulls circle over the lake and soar off to enjoy a feed at the landfill. Now this may be an Urban Myth and I stand to be corrected but the man who told me is sticking to his story…..
