At Much Marcle: Homme House British Horse Eventing
Homme House is a secret estate. It's one of those places that you only get to know the history and ancestors of , should you stumble across it.
I stumbled across Homme House today. On my way to another engagement, but drawn in by the lure of the signage,'Horse Trials, British Eventing' hanging on the gate. Its not that I consider myself to be a sporting person, but like anyone with the Olympic spirit still leaping about in their bones, seeing professional sports people in action is magnetic.
Its a magnetic place to stroll around too. Homme House rose to fame in the 1327, through Roger Mortimer, lover of Queen Isabella and co conspiring to imprison and murder Edward II in Berkley Castle. After that Homme House became the property of the crown before being bought by Thomas Kyrle, great uncle of Sir John Kyrle.
"From his early twenties, John Kyrle adopted a frugal lifestyle and instead of utilising his wealth for himself, he sought to invest in the greater good of his locality and community that lived there. In everything that concerned the welfare of the small town of Ross in which he lived he took a lively interest; in the education of the children and in improving and embellishing the town. He planted trees in and around the town, with two or three workmen to assist with the manual work. He delighted in mediating between those who had quarrelled and in preventing costly lawsuits between prominent townspeople. He was generous to the poor and spent all he had in good works." (Wikepia)
Homme House estate is a feel good place to be. A perfect setting with inspirational tones for this competition. There is no fee to get in through the gate. No huge charges for your bacon buttie. Just roaming people, smiley faces, and clever horse and riders. John Kyrle would be smiling today....oh and tomorrow too...call in if your near..it's worth a look...:)x
