On the road again!
I couldn't decide which collage to blip today, but opted for the one of shots taken on the way back to Kovalam.
The extra has some of 'my' people in it.
Raja my auto driver by his auto, he came to take me to breakfast as usual then came to pick up the school mat which I'd borrowed to sleep on. The group are the employees of the bakery, all deaf and all determined that I shouldn't miss any of them from the photo. My communication skills do on with them and I have the odd Makaton type sign which they use too. I realised I hadn't put up a shot of a man in their local dress of Dhoti, usually white and often with gold braid, or Lunghi, usually more colourful and this years design seems to be able plaid. They can be worn long, but it's very common to see them doubled up, like this man's, much more practical when out and about or riding a two wheeler .
The final shout is the Sri Madhuram restaurant where I have breakfast. There are three or four of them in the town and the food is always good and fresh. They're a strict vegetarian chain so no eggs either.
The motor cyclist with his supplies was on the road to Kovalam, about half way here. The journey is 170km, but takes the best part of four hours. Today's was particularly tedious as we had to keep stopping when the boot of the car kept bouncing open when ever we went over a bump (often). Just a lock problem madam, the driver said, all right for him, it was my worldly goods which were at risk of being scattered to the four airts.! For once, as I know where we were going and knew the car company I hadn't bothered to transfer my passport etc to my handbag while travelling which made me even more nervous.
The motor bike seller is, according to Wikipedia selling items used to scare off bad spirits. You can read more here, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drishti_bommai
We followed him for quite a while until he found some people to sell to.
The main blip again is sights among the way. A group of nuns on a corner in Marthandam, which is a largish town on route famed for its honey and its 'tinkering workshops'. I just love that description, basically it is a small local garage which specialises in repairing cars, autos and two wheelers by fixing them rather than simply replacing bits! I forgot to mention that we travelled on, so to speak, route 66!
The larger goat statue is on the outskirts of Tirunelveli, I've not noticed it before. Apparently it was out there by the local art college, which, to be honest I didn't even know existed.
The over filled lorry is a typical sight on the South Indian roads. They're not actually legal, however they usually drive at night without lights so not only are they not legal, not safe, but they are a positive danger when you come across them trundling along in the middle of a main road.
It's been very wet since I arrived this afternoon, which has brought the mosquitoes out, the salty air here doesn't seem to suit them so they are not usually a problem. There have been some spectacular thunder and lightening displays. It's going to continue off and on though. The hotel obviously like me because they brought me an umbrella when I was plucking up the courage to go for some dinner! One of the few things I didn't think to pack and bring with me, lol
It's the last Friday of the month, so art quiz day : https://nationalgalleries.typeform.com/to/XzwDqQUd?fbclid=IwY2xjawIuubhleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHSRIsfuPBNyCNGzZYyzB5NJASkzPLszQ3RFHQUprNVES_bP9jN5xqlX24w_aem_Ftb15aiorfHK6rXE3vE6PQ&typeform-source=lm.facebook.com
I got 9/10 so I'm pleased about that.
