Not another volcano - just Suilven
You might be forgiven for thinking that the improbable lump looming behind the village of Lochinver has a volcanic origin, both from it's general shape and also our travelling habits. However, it is the MASSIVE sandstone bulk of Suilven. This is not the most impressive view of it, but it is the view straight outside our cabin at the other side of the loch.
Suilven stands 731m tall and is composed of Torridonian sandstone and sits on an ancient level bedrock of Lewisian gneiss. It was carved out by the retreating glaciers and left as a tear drop shaped 'Inselberg' along with a small collection of other similar mounds in the area. We climbed it many years ago - it was not difficult but it is a stiff 10km walk across the boggy flats just to get to the base of it. On top, you get very little impression of the steepness of the sides.
