The Romans were defeated here!
This is Limestone Corner on Hadrian's Wall. It is the point at which the Roman soldiers had to divert the course of the wall to the north. Apparently they could not cut through the rocks here.
The rocks are not limestone either. They are the hard granite of the whin sill.
It's all a bit of a mystery, because they managed similar rocks in other areas. Perhaps it was the particular battalion who were working here.
We will never know.
When I meet other walkers here, I always say that this is the place where the Roman army was defeated.
It was me who was defeated today. There was a wild wind blowing. I took my tripod up to the trig point, near to here, but both tripod and camera just vibrated in the wind. Hand held shots were not much better, because I was moving!
I found some shelter amongst the rocks.
I've been to the Tynedale Photo Group tonight and enjoyed seeing work by other members. It was a fun evening.
