Little known disaster.
Walking along the Spen Valley Greenway this afternoon, we passed this simple plaque.
Back in 1916 a munitions factory was manufacturing picric acid to be used as an explosive.
It caught fire and was well alight when the Bradford Fire Brigade arrived.
A massive explosion and series of smaller ones killed 40 people, injuring many more.
The disaster was not widely reported at the time due to reporting restrictions.
100 years later, on the Anniversary of the disaster, this plaque was unveiled, near the former plant.
Dedicated to all those who lost their lives in the disaster.
I hope people who walk along the Greenway stop to read this and just say a little thank you to those who gave their lives doing their bit for our freedom.
( Unfortunately it didn’t last long)
It has been a very pleasant day.
Bedding dried outside.
A couple of hours spent in the garden this morning. Brown bin full.
Lovely 4/5 mile walk this afternoon.
Will be watching the final episode of Unforgotten this evening.
It was nice to see the scenes which were supposed to be Ireland were actually shot in Solva, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Near where we are staying in May. Looks a lovely place.
