Roads like rivers....
This morning I flew from Blantyre to Lilongwe, where we had to disembark and return to the plane, then to Harare where we sat for 40 minutes and then eventually I arrived in Lusaka! Just as the plane touched down the heavens opened and so leaving the plane we all got absolutely soaked through!
I collected my bag and my friend was waiting for me! On the way to town, the rain got heavier and as Lusaka is on a slope all the water was heading our way - we were literally driving through rivers - I was worried that the water would get into the engine of the vehicle as it was so deep! Thankfully, we managed to make it home where we have good drainage and the water passed us by!
A couple of compounds in Lusaka however are not so fortunate. They are up to their knees in water and electricity has been shut down as a precaution! This happens every year when we have major downpours but nothing is every done about drainage. There is so much rubbish clogging drains and people do not seem to understand that they should dispose of rubbish wisely! I really feel for these people as they are in the poorer parts of the city and yet they seem to suffer most. And of course, cholera will increase as sewage and water systems become mixed up in the flooding as this is where pit latrines and bore holes are!
