Sally Mair - Loving life

By Sallymair

Another terrace and another door...

....to paraphrase Andrew Lloyd Webber.
I've had a fairly quiet day with Ida today, Prem who is an ophthalmologist and 3 years older than me has not yet given up work. He's given up most paid work but still volunteers at the hospital he founded in one of the small shanty areas of Tirunelveli. He also runs a clinic in a Leprosy hospital and one in the downstairs room of their house. But he tells me he's retired, lol.
The room I am staying in has its own separate door which is very smart as you can see. It opens onto the first floor terrace of their house. It's rather a cool shady place, if there is such a thing here. When I arrived last night it was to the news that the AC had broken and the engineer was coming today so I only had a ceiling fan last night. I didn't expect to sleep but in fact slept really well. It's now working so at least I'll be sure of being comfortable tonight.
I went for a walk this afternoon and popped into my favourite stationery shop. I always stock up on leads for my favourite Faber-Castell propelling pencils. I can get B and 2B leads here which are very soft so much easier to rub out on my Sudoku puzzles. Not that I do as many of those in books now as I used too. Still, I bought four packs of leads at 4p each. Hard to resist really. I'll be going back and buying some nice pens etc before I leave. Love a good stationery shop!
The pictures in the blip are of a Democratic rally being held right outside the house this evening. This is the opposition Congress Party - not the ruling BJP party who are not particularly popular in this area. As you can see in the pictures it's well decorated and they have lots and lots of very loud loudspeakers all of which are blasting out what to me is unintelligible Tamil. Prem tells me it should be finished by 11pm. Joy!
