Museums!
Morning we went to visit the Ashmolean museum. Opposite our hotel! A fabulous place with many treasures! From Chinese porcelaine to modern paintings and two beautiful carvings by Barbara Hepworth! You just want to touch them, but you can’t!
We met up with son and granddaughter for a pizza for lunch in the market! A really good one! Then a quick walk round to Costa for a drink and share of delicious chocolate cake!
Ro was tired and left me with P. We decided to see the history of science museum. They have a blackboard from Einstein’s second lecture - see extra. He describes what relativity has to say about the universe. The museums web site is excellent! The next exhibit was Dorothy Hodgkin: “ Penicillin, the stuff that almost brings people back from the dead.” She was given the Nobel prize in 1964 for her work on its structure using X-ray crystallography.
I also found out that Laurence of Arabia had a camera!
The Emperor heads outside the Sheldonian theatre. Their number varied over the years. They were not real people but just there for decoration. Christopher Wren and William Byrd had a hand in the first set of heads and in honour of this one of the heads has a bird sculpted in its hair! The heads wear out and are replaced when they do.
Ended the evening in a pub watching the Everton/liverpool match which ended in a draw! The Wig and Pen! Some great paintings of judges!
