If Candlemas Day is clear and bright,
winter will have another bite.
If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain,
winter is gone and won't come again.
It is uncertain if we will have more cold wintery weather or not according to the weather lore rhyme today on Candlemas.  Although there was only a trace of rain it was cloudy for most of the day so perhaps we can look forward to reasonable weather.   Another saying was that if a badger or hedgehog came out of its hole and saw its shadow it would return to hibernating as it thought the weather would be bad. German settlers took the tradition to America and it was adapted to be a groundhog.  Today is Groundhog Day there and in Punxsutawney the local groundhog, Phil predicted there will be another six weeks of winter.  Another Scottish proverb says that  "If the laverock [skylark] sings afore Candlemas, she'll mourn as lang after it".  On our walk on Thursday we remarked that unusually we did not hear any skylarks so perhaps we do not need to worry about the weather in the next few weeks!
Although there is an element of truth in some weather proverbs I doubt if there is any truth in these.
