Chainsaw Politics
When B and I went for our walk today, we saw a team of workers cut down all mature trees in a big old garden. A sad sight.
This day also marks a chainsaw moment in German politics. Friedrich Merz, who most likely will lead our next government, broke a major promise even before the elections. He had promised never to make an alliance with the far-right party AfD. But today, he and his party (CDU, the conservatives of this country) worked together with the AfD to get a new law through parliament.
Their common goal is, basically, a Trump-style wall all around the country. Never mind the constitutional rights for asylum seekers, or European law.
Democracy and common sense are being sacrificed for populism, seemingly everywhere. This makes me sad - and furious - too.
