You don't really see it, unless you freeze the action, but birds (and small birds in particular) often dive off a perch with their wings closed initially, only opening their wings later.

Storm Éowny arrives tonight, here in the South West we are only getting clipped by the edges, so hopefully our roof and fences will still be in place in the morning. "Éowyn"?  Yep, the storm is named after that princess - the daughter of the king of the Rohirrim, the cross-dressing shield maiden destined to kill the Lord of the Nazgûl in Tolkien's Return of the King.
