The Nelson and Railway Inn

Inns and pubs are important parts of our social history and traditionally featured prominently in community life.
All over the country they are closing in their thousands.
Here in Kimberley a few remain and several have interesting stories to tell.
This inn, which is rather unremarkable in appearance, was actually built about 1700 and originally called "The Pelican" - for some obscure reason.
It changed its name, seemingly, during the 19th Century, as it became a calling point for "The Nelson" - a coaching service which left Nottingham every morning, bound for Manchester and Liverpool via Matlock.
The name changed again after the arrival of the Great Northern Railway to the present "Nelson and Railway", with the inn being located close between both Kimberley Stations ( Midland and GNR) and thus becoming a convenient interchange point.
