Peacefully absorbing
This memorial erected on Codden Hill is to Caroline Allpass, the first wife of Jeremy Thorpe who died in a tragic accident whilst driving back to North Devon from London. Thorpe and their young son Rupert traveled by train because there was no room due to the car being full of luggage.
After another stunning pre sunrise, breakfast and tidy we spent much of the day exploring the footpaths and trails between Bishops Tawton and Landkey returning via Codden hill. After a slightly cloudy start the sun shone down on this glorious area showing its natural beauty.
Hills, muddy footpaths, kissing gates, styles and fast flowing streams were the flavour of the day.
Kingfisher, buzzards and an abundance of skylarks were the most memorable feathered creatures we encountered.
The views from the 629 foot summit were spectacular with Dartmoor, Exmoor and Lundy Island all visible .Dippy and I enjoyed our pre packed lunch sitting on the base of the monument with just a slight chill in the wind.(extra 1)
Back to town for a warm drink and a bun before heading back to Amadeus to collect the apple pie for the Wassail supper.
Two orchards were targeted and our choir performed their best efforts at scaring away any troublesome spirits with hope for a good crop of fruit later in the year.
Two dozen of us enjoyed some delicious homemade treats and beverages including apple juice from last year’s harvest and an interesting lime flower tea.
An interesting and enjoyable experience with excellent company.
