Tour of Winchester

I’ve been to yoga, met a friend for coffee, did some gardening and made a banana loaf.

The photos from left clockwise are:

23 High Street
It was originally the meat market but in 1857 this building was built in the Greek Doric revival style. It was still used as a meat market. However in 1896 when people preferred to shop in shops rather than at stalls the building was converted into a restaurant.

Crown and Anchor
There has been a pub on this site since the mid 19th Century but the current building dates from the early 1930s.

118 High Street
Built in 1827 on the site of the church of St Mary Kalender. Most of central Winchester was part of the parish of St Mary Kalender however by the 1640s it was in a terrible state. In the 1920s F.W. Woolworth purchased the site and demolished everything.

Guildhall Barometer
The barometer is on the outside wall of the Victorian Guildhall. Beside them are carvings which give geographical information. They read: "Height above the sea 127.2. Latitude 51 04 N Longitude 1 19 West. Real Noon 5 min 16 secs later than at Greenwich. The compass points 9 4 West in 1954'. But I can’t find out when they were added.
