They Romans
This is a shot of the River Itchen for Wide Wednesday taken early this morning. As the subject today is Man Made you might well ask why it's appropriate. Well, it were they Romans who dug this channel for the water to flow through. I've put the Information Board in as an extra, but as it's rusted and crumbling here's a translation:
In pre-historic times the Itchen flowed in two main channels in the centre of the valley near the Cathedral. Following the foundation of the Roman town about 70AD this artificial channel was created. This both reduced the chance of flooding in the town centre and provided an eastern defence moat. In the medieval period the river was nearly twice as wide as today.
Many thanks to steveng for hosting WidWed this month.
Nothing else much to report: a grocery delivery, some clearing up and I feel quite soon some laziness coming on. Now, where's that book?
Enjoy the rest of your day/evening xx
