Inukshuk

Our friend left us yesterday with a small gift, it's an inukshuk, an Inuit symbol. He thinks they are probably made at Cambridge Bay by. the Inuit but he bought this one at the Museum of History in Ottawa.

I put him on the snow to represent how I imagine the Inuit living. It seemed so appropriate that we had snow at this time.

“Inukshuk” means “in the likeness of a human". Inuit have been creating impressive stone markers on the Arctic landscape. Inukshuks serve several functions, including guiding travellers, warning of danger, assisting hunters and marking places of reverence. They are composed of lose stones balanced on each other.

Inuksuit (plural) are also thought to be a symbol of welcome. These weekend there were four of us in the house, entertaining two people is more than we've done for a long time. I hope this can be the start of us being able to welcome visitors again.

Don got to London today, hopefully his plane will fly tomorrow.
