The Shipping Forecast

As I've no doubt mentioned on here before, I don't have a TV, although I watched the sum total of two series last year - 'Slow Horses' with the Minx and 'For All Mankind' with Izzy (albeit remotely) - on my laptop.

I don''t listen to podcasts (just one last year, recommended to me by Hannah) nor do I listen to the radio.

However, many years ago, I would listen to the radio twice a day, on my commute to and from work: Today in the morning and PM in the evening. And, occasionally, I would listen to The Shipping Forecast. (Maybe this was if I left particularly early for work.)

I don't think it ever really occurred to me that anyone else would enjoy it, but over the years I've discovered that, of course, LOADS of people love it just as much as I ever did.

Today, Radio 4 devoted most of its broadcasting to The Shipping Forecast, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and we had the radio on all day in the cottage, while we had a very relaxed time.

There were all sorts of things to enjoy: the history, of course, and the explanation of precisely how the forecast works and can be understood, and then various people reading the forecast from a day that was significant to them. It was wonderful.

Mind you, that's enough radio for one year.
