Call this snow!

We were expecting snow and did indeed wake up to a white world. Except it was not ‘proper’ snow, just wet stuff that was disappearing quickly. Now we have rain and virtually all the snow has gone. We definitely didn’t have a ‘Big Freeze’. It’s been a dismal, damp, cold day with sleet rather than snow.

Coincidently, I finished reading ‘The Land in Winter’ by Andrew Miller. It’s a newly published book, one I chose in Waterstones as my Christmas book. I enjoyed it. It is set in the few winter months of 1962/63 when there really was a Big Freeze. I was a young teenager at the time and can’t recall anything of it at all. Gordon remembers that he couldn’t play Rugby and also that on the beach in Silloth the foam brought in by waves was frozen.

It was interesting reading the book and thinking back to a time of no mobile phones and no computers, no central heating, a time when people really were cold and could be snowed in for weeks at a time.
