Maggie Wanted to Know...
... how to read a book, but it I guess she didn't find it all that interesting? zzzzz
Today was cold and blustery...more of a reading and napping day rather than a get-out-and-walk day; so I spent it mostly reading. Oh yes, and napping. Yesterday's social outing was So exhausting!
I finished How to Read a Book which was a charming story with a happy ending, so it was an uplifting read on a dreary, grey winter day.
A fellow blipper whose opinion I respect and trust, had posted that her favourite book of 2024 was How Georgia Became O'Keeffe; so, as Georgia is my favourite American artist, I ordered it right away and Voilà..it arrived last night! Next day delivery! (We have the technology)
I started reading it and so far am enamoured ..I like the writing style and the approach the author takes to Georgia's story which makes this book quite different than the ones I have read before. Thank you so much fellow blipper!
Oh and the third book? The Complete Idiot's Guide to Intermediate French? It has been on my shelf for decades...I had always thought I wasn't quite ready for Intermediate French..I hardly knew the basics..and couldn't even list all the French tenses let alone use them! Now after all the Duolingo lessons I have been playing with, I thought perhaps now was the time? I still don't know the tenses, but I do have more vocabulary.... and if Complete Idiots can learn from this book, surely I could pick up a few pointers...
Well. Quel surpris..I am learning already! Who knew there is a list of noun endings that are always masculine? and the same for feminine? One doesn't have to memorize each noun's gender..one can guess..and usually correctly? Where was that list in my high school French days? Geez.
And it gives you "simple ways to avoid cultural and linguistic faux pas" which is valuable knowledge to have; faux pas are SO embarrassing...
and it is full of little hints about things you have always wondered about...like how to really pronounce "petit"...( pti - drop the "e"? totally?)
It is a book that will take me a very long time to get through - but might be mastered by reading a little bit every day along with my morning cafe au lait ...which one drinks only at breakfast...not in the afternoon..ever! (faux pas!) So already I am on my way to not embarrassing myself en Paris)
Books rule!
