Back to Normal...
...sort of. It feels like Monday but it is actually Thursday. It was sunny and nice today but it is supposed to rain again tomorrow. I collected the information I needed for the fabric store so we could stop by there on the way home, but I lost it somewhere between my workroom and the kitchen and had to go without it.
With the possible exception of my high school years in Pasadena when the Rose Parade featured large, I have never been much of a fan of New year celebrations. It all seems a bit contrived, and other than making beans and greens, I've never done much to celebrate it. Midnight in New York is good enough for me as parties are difficult to organize and people never seem quite sure what to do with themselves while they await the midnight hour. To illustrate the point, we were literally raised from our beds by the most colossal booms...booms like bombs, not like fireworks...two of them in the middle of the night. We assumed it must be someone celebrating midnight, but it was more likely somebody who was too drunk to notice the passing of midnight and didn't get around to setting off his rocket until about 1:20!
Anyway, I'm glad we can now get on with the business of restocking the larder with fruits and veggies, and get back to asking ourselves, what is it about the American political and economic systems that could persuade half of the voters of this country to vote for a man who refuses to operate by the constitutional rules of government.? I mentioned yesterday that this felt more like a time to reflect than to complain about Trump's character and policies. Both parties pledge, during the election cycle, which seems almost permanent, to help the poor and powerless only to ignore them after it. The poor are now at the point of desperation; some are already resorting to violence. A very wise friend of mine predicted this during the W. Bush years. What do you do if you are suffering and nobody pays any attention? We all need to make sacrifices, but especially the billionaire class that controls the economy. Otherwise we will be watching the system spiral into chaos.
