The Pensioner

This is more the weather we like. Aye, they’ll get their comeuppance noo, whoever they are. The quiet satisfaction of the old man behind his net curtains who knew no good would come of it. Did your Granny and Grandad go into town and go on outdoor rides and the like on the last days of the year? They did not. They were doing the dusting and getting the Brasso out to welcome in the new year in the proper manner. Saved their outdoor excursions for the summer; a trip down the coast to Dunbar where the weather was more reliable or over to Kinghorn. I could go on, but nobody’s listening; they’ve all got their headphones on, shouting into their phones on the bus. Aye well, hell mend them.
Where was I? Ah yes I went and got a steak pie up at Crombie’s to have on New Year’s Day. If I’m spared.
