A Cyclops At Rest
I was struggling for today's blip and then thought why not combine Greek mythology, a portrait and my brother's love of photography.
Cyclops are the immensely strong one-eyed giants of Greek mythology and primordial makers of Zues' thunderbolt that helped defeat the Titans, which of course immediately sprang into my mind when I saw the depiction of a huge eye on the cover of one of my brother's favourite photography books called the "Suffering of Light" by Alex Webb that you can see him holding, rather uncomfortably on my instruction (sorry bro!), in this image so that I could create an attempted 'alternative' portrait. It's a bit rubbish (o.k, quite a lot rubbish) but hey sometimes you just have to try these things!
Getting back to the book - it gathers together Alex Webb's most iconic images, many of which were taken in the far corners of the earth. He is recognised as pioneer of American colour photography and has since the 1970's consistently created photographs characterised by intense colour and light. His. work, with its richly layered and complex composition, touches on multiple genres, including street photography, photojournalism and fine art, but he claims "to me it is all photography...you just have to go out and explore the world with a camera". If you get the chance I urge you to look up his wonderful images online or in print.
So there you have it - a blip not showing a true representation of the Hellenic based myth that I've mentioned, a portrait that does not show the actual portraitee properly and photographic advice not taken - I only got as far as one of our bedrooms and therefore resolutely failed to explore the world with my camera! :-)
