Compost Corner.
When we were in the big old Kauri Villa in Herne Bay/Ponsonby I used some left over boards to build two compost bins. When Bin 1 was full Bin 2 was emptied into a plastic bin with a lid, and Bin 1 went into Bin 2. The three bin style of composting I inherited from my father worked well.
After 20 years of apartment living, we moved to the A-Frame, and I was discouraged by the cost of wooden bins, and by the lack of space for three bins. So I opted for a single bin approach. At the bottom of each of the four sides there is a sliding entry from which the bottom and therefore most composted can be accessed.
This afternoon I shovelled out enough compost to fill a 40L plastic bag, and created enough room at the top to last until the next bagful of compost becomes ready. Mixing my home made compost with the Garden Mix provides a great growing environment.
The Ponga logs to one side are waiting to be used to help delineate the edge of the grassed area. On the other side are four large blocks of wood cut from the trunk of one of the Kanuka trees removed when the new retaining wall went up.
