Growing
Plants are progressing nicely in the tunnel house. I was in there for a couple of hours this afternoon, putting up the supports for the tomatoes and tying them in, then taking off the side shoots. Somehow I have fitted in five more plants than last year, but they are growing well (see extra 1) and the first fruit have set on a couple of the plants.
The main is one of the sweetcorn plants already showing its flower. They are fabulous plants and hopefully the cobs will be similarly fabulous. Mind you a recent freezer audit revealed that I still have 15 cobs in there from last year! Some of them will make a big cauldron of corn chowder as soon as potatoes are ready to be lifted.
For years I exchanged what we dubbed 'tunnelporn' with a friend who lived near Dundee in Scotland: news and photos from the NZ tunnelhouse and Scottish polytunnel. Our successes, failures, ideas, challenges, advice and enthusiasm. She died suddenly and much too young earlier this year and this summer I am without my co-eccentric in all things tunnel-related. I miss her.
So Blippers who Blip your polytunnels, don't be surprised if you receive over-enthusiastic comments from me when spring comes round again in the northern hemisphere.
